About CISPR 36

CISPR 36 is an international standard that contains limits and procedures for the measurement of radio disturbances in the frequency range of 150 kHz to 30 MHz. It defines limits for 3 m measurement distance and methods of measurement that are designed to provide protection for off-board receivers (at 10 m distance) in the frequency range of 150 kHz to 30 MHz when used in the residential environment.

CISPR 36 applies to the emission of electromagnetic energy which might cause interference to radio reception and which is emitted from electric and hybrid electric vehicles propelled by an internal traction battery when operated on the road.

Electric vehicles to which CISPR 14-1 applies are not in the scope of CISPR 36. CISPR 36 applies only to road vehicles where an electric propulsion is used for sustained speed of more than 6 km/h. Vehicles where the electric motor is only used to start up the internal combustion engine and vehicles where the electric motor is used for additional propulsion only during acceleration are not in the scope of the standard.

Title of CISPR 36:2020+AMD1:2023 (Edition 1.1) is Electric and hybrid electric road vehicles – Radio disturbance characteristics – Limits and methods of measurement for the protection of off-board receivers below 30 MHz

CISPR 36 is published by IEC and can preview of recent version. If you want to reach full version of the standard you have to purchase it via IEC’s or any of national standard authorities’ web store.

Measurement distance at CISPR 36

CISPR 36 defines standard measurement distance as 3 meters. 10 meter measurement is under consideration by the standard committee.

Frequency range of CISPR 36

The standard requires magnetic field emissions testing between 150kHz to 30MHz.

Measurement Site

CISPR 36 requires any of these measurement sites: OTS, OATS (Open Area Test Site) or ALSE (Absorber Lined Shielded Enclosure). Correlation between measurement sites is still under consideration.

Measuring Instruments

CISPR 36 requires these instruments: measuring receiver and magnetic field antennas.

Limits

Limit of magnetic field disturbance (quasi-peak detector) at 3 m antenna is given on Figure 1 of the standard.

Comparison between other emissions standards

There are three international emissions standards for automotive: CISPR 36, CISPR 25 and CISPR 12. CISPR 36 is to provide protection for off-board receivers (at 10 m distance) in the frequency range of 150 kHz to 30 MHz. Protection of receivers used on board the same vehicle as the disturbance source(s) is covered by CISPR 25. CISPR 12 is to provide protection for broadcast (off-board) receivers in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 1 000 MHz when used in the residential environment. CISPR 12 is a complimentary standard of CISPR 36 in terms of emissions, the only difference is the measurement frequencies and test setups.
