UN ECE Regulation 10 requires EMC tests for Electronic Sub Assemblies (ESAs) used for automotive. According to UN ECE R10 revision 6, ESAs are grouped into two:

  • ESAs in configuration other than ”REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”
  • ESAs in configuration “REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”

On this post we will list all EMC tests for ESAs in configuration ”REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”

Test under UN ECE R10 Rev.6 ESAs in configuration
“REESS charging mode
coupled to the power grid”
Test Site
Radiated Emissions (30MHz-1GHz) Required ALSE or OATS
Radiated Immunity (20-400MHz)
Bulk current injection testing according to ISO 11452-4
Required Shielded Enclosure
Radiated Immunity (400MHz-2GHz)
Absorber chamber test according to ISO 11452-2
Required ALSE
Transient Emissions (ISO 7637-2)
12V system: +75 V and -100V
24V system: +150 V and -450V
Required N/A
Transient Immunity (ISO 7637-2)
Pulse No: 1, 2a, 2b, 3a/3b
Required N/A
Transient Immunity (ISO 7637-2)
Pulse No: 4
Not Required N/A
Conducted Emissions (0.15-30MHz) Required Shielded Enclosure, ALSE or OATS
Harmonics Emissions (AC power lines)
≤ 16 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-2)
> 16 A and ≤ 75 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-12)
Required N/A
Voltage fluctuations and Flicker Emissions (AC power lines)
≤ 16 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-3)
> 16 A and ≤ 75 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-11)
Required N/A
EFT/Burst Immunity (IEC 61000-4-4)
AC or DC power lines: ± 2 kV
Required N/A
Surge Immunity (IEC 61000-4-5)
AC power lines: ± 2 kV
DC power lines: ± 0.5 kV
Required N/A

Required tests are for ESAs in configurations REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid are shown on the table above. The table is derived by us according to latest version of UN ECE Regulation 10. As seen, all listed tests, other than Transient Immunity (ISO 7637-2) Pulse No: 4 test, are required.

Table also shows test site requirement of each test. ALSE means Absorber Lined Shielded Enclosure, it is also called anechoic chamber. It is a shielded room and internal walls of it covered with RF absorbing materials. Shielded Enclosure means a screened room, without any ferrite tile or RF absorber. OATS means Open Area Test Site which requires a outdoor space.
