UN ECE Regulation 10 requires EMC tests for vehicles used for automotive. According to UN ECE R10 revision 6, vehicles are grouped into two:

  • Vehicles in configuration other than ”REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”
  • Vehicles in configuration “REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”

On this post we will list all EMC tests for vehicles in configuration other than ”REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid”

Test under UN ECE R10 Rev.6

Vehicles in configuration other than
“REESS charging mode
coupled to the power grid”

(vehicles without immunity-related functions)

Vehicles in configuration other than
“REESS charging mode
coupled to the power grid”

(vehicles with immunity-related functions)

Test Site

Radiated Emissions (30MHz-1GHz)

Broadband (Peak and Quasi-Peak)

Required Required ALSE or OTS

Radiated Emissions (30MHz-1GHz)

Narrowband (Average)

Required Required ALSE or OTS

Conducted Emissions (0.15-30MHz)

for AC/DC power lines

Not Required Not Required ALSE, OTS or Shielded Enclosure

Conducted Emissions (0.15-30MHz)

for wired network ports

Not Required Not Required ALSE, OTS or Shielded Enclosure
Harmonics Emissions (AC power lines)
≤ 16 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-2)
> 16 A and ≤ 75 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-12)
Not Required Not Required N/A
Voltage fluctuations and Flicker Emissions (AC power lines)
≤ 16 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-3)
> 16 A and ≤ 75 A per phase (IEC 61000-3-11)
Not Required Not Required N/A
Radiated Immunity (ISO 11451-2)*
20MHz-2GHz
Not Required Required

-ALSE or OTS

-Dynamometer or insulated axle

EFT/Burst Immunity (IEC 61000-4-4)
AC or DC power lines: ± 2 kV
Not Required Not Required Reference Ground Plane
Surge Immunity (IEC 61000-4-5)
AC power lines: ± 2 kV
DC power lines: ± 0.5 kV
Not Required Not Required Reference Ground Plane

 * If vehicle is longer than 12 m and/or wider than 2.60 m and/or higher than 4.00 m, Bulk Current Injection (BCI) tests shall be applied according to ISO 11451-4 standard.  In this case, current level is 50mA rms.

Required tests are for vehicles in configurations REESS charging mode coupled to the power grid are shown on the table above. The table is derived by us according to latest version of UN ECE Regulation 10. As seen, all listed tests, more tests is required for vehicles with immunity related functions.

Table also shows test site requirement of each test. ALSE (Absorber Lined Shielded Enclosure) is also called anechoic chamber. It is a shielded room and internal walls of it covered with RF absorbing materials. Shielded Enclosure means a screened room, without any ferrite tile or RF absorber. OTS means Outdoor Test Site which requires a outdoor space or earth.

What are immunity related functions?
