ISO 11451-2

(ISO 11451-2 is an international standard that defines electromagnetic immunity requirements of the passenger cars and commercial vehicles used in automotive)

Latest version of ISO 11451-2 is Edition 4 (ISO 11451-2:2015). It is published by ISO on June 2015. Radiated Immunity test standard for automotive. The electromagnetic disturbances considered are limited to narrowband electromagnetic fields. You will find most of the essential details of this standard on this page. Tests, test setup requirements and more…

ISO 11451-2, requires to apply electromagnetic disturbances to the vehicle under test in an anechoic chamber or open test site.

Generated Radiated electromagnetic fields are applied to the operating vehicle and performance and functions of the vehicle is monitored during this test.

About ISO 11451-2

ISO 11451-2, international standard published by ISO, specifies a method for testing the immunity of passenger cars and commercial vehicles to electrical disturbances from off-vehicle radiation sources, regardless of the vehicle propulsion system. The vehicle can have any propulsion system (spark ignition engine, diesel engine or electric motor). This standard is dealing with the electromagnetic disturbances only related to narrowband electromagnetic fields. The standard refers specifically to passenger cars and commercial vehicles, but  it can readily be applied to any type of vehicle.

Title of ISO 11451-2 is Road vehicles — Vehicle test methods for electrical disturbances from narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy — Part 2: Off-vehicle radiation sources

Let us review ISO 11451-2:2015

Test Location

Two alternative test location is defined on the standards:

1. ALSE (Absorber Lined Shielded Enclosure) (recommended)

The purpose of using ALSE is to create an indoor electromagnetic compatibility testing facility that simulates open field testing. The size, shape and construction of the ALSE can vary. Typically, floor ground is not covered by RF absorbing materials. The minimum size of ALSE is determined by:

* the size of test region needed

* the size of field generating device(s)

* the needed clearances between test region, field generating device(s) and the largest vehicle to be tested

* the characteristics of the absorbing material

Reflected energy in the test region shall be reduced to -10dB or less over the test frequency range. Figure 1 of ISO 11451-2 shows an example of rectangular shielded enclosure.

2. OTS (Open Test Site) (alternative)

This is an alternative test site for performing radiated immunity tests for vehicles. It does not require a shielded enclosure and compliant open area can be used. OTS test facility shall comply with local(national) and legal requirements regarding the emission of electromagnetic fields.

Vehicle Test Configurations

Three different vehicle test configuration is defined:

* Vehicle not connected to power grid (for all vehicles)

* Vehicle in charging mode connected to power grid (for only electric or hybrid/plugin vehicles)

* Vehicle in charging mode through Wireless Power Transmission (WPT)  (for only electric propelled vehicles)

Test Insrumentation and Test Setup

These instruments are required

* Field Generating Device(s) (Antenna(s) or TLS)

* Field Probe(s)

* RF Signal Generator with modulation capability

* High power amplifier(s)

* Power meter (or equiavalent) to measure forward power and reflected power

Three different test setups is defined and test setups depend on the three vehicle test configurations given above.
