EMC Testing for Lighting

(Electromagnetic compatibility tests for lighting products are mostly done by using these international standards: CISPR 15, IEC 61547, IEC 61000-3-2, IEC 61000-3-3. European versions of these standards are EN 55015, EN 61547, EN 61000-3-2, EN 61000-3-3)

You will find most of the essential details of EMC requirements for lighting products on this page. Tests, test setup requirements and more…

CISPR 15 lists the EMC emissions requirements, IEC 61547 lists the EMC immunity requirements for lighting equipments. In addition to these two standards, for AC products, IEC 61000-3-2 and IEC 61000-3-3 standards are also used for harmonics and flicker emissions requirements.

EMC Tests listed under CISPR 15

CISPR 15 is an EMC emissions standard specif to lighting products. It is published by IEC and accepted by most of the countries since it is an international standard. Tests given on this standard are mainly in three categories:

1) Conducted Emissions (Conducted disturbance voltages, Disturbance current), Frequency: 9kHz-30MHz

AC or DC electric power supply interface terminals and/or Wired network interfaces other than power supply of EUT is subjected to the conducted emissions tests. Conducted RF emissions on test port is measured via CISPR 16-1-1 compliant receiver, CISPR 16-1-2 compliant Artificial Mains V-network, LISN, AAN, CVP or current probe. Purpose of this test is to ensure that emissions on the tested port is under the limits. Depending on the tested port frequency range can be modified to 150kHz-30MHz, but AC or DC power ports requires testing between 9kHz and 30MHz.

2) Magnetic Field Emissions (Radiated disturbance), Frequency: 9kHz-30MHz

Enclosure of EUT is subjected to magnetic field emissions tests by using via CISPR 16-1-1 compliant receiver and CISPR 16-1-4 compliant Large Loop Antenna System (LLAS). Diamater of LLAS can be 2, 3 or 4 meters. For each diameter, limits (in dBuA) differs. In same cases, this test may not be necessary. If the EUT is incapable of generating a large magnetic dipole moment, then no test is required and the EUT is deemed to comply with the radiated-field disturbance limits in the frequency range of 9 kHz to 30 MHz.

3) Radiated Emissions (Radiated-field disturbance), Frequency: 30MHz-1GHz (30-300MHz for CDNE test method)

Radiated emissions of enclosure port of EUT is measured via CISPR 16-1-1 complaint receiver, CISPR 16-1-4 compliant antennas and test site (or IEC 61000-4-20 compliant test cell, TEM Cell, GTEM or CISPR 16-1-2 compliant coupling devices – CDNEs). For radiated field disturbance test CISPR 15 allows to choose one the following five test methods:

Test Method Frequency Range Limits Reference Test Standard (Measurement Method)
OATS or SAC at 10m 30MHz-1GHz 30-37 dB(μV/m) CISPR 16-2-3
OATS or SAC at 3m 30MHz-1GHz 40-47 dB(μV/m) CISPR 16-2-3
FAR at 3m 30MHz-1GHz 42…35-42 dB(μV/m) CISPR 16-2-3
TEM-waveguide 30MHz-1GHz 30-37 dB(μV/m) IEC 61000-4-20
CDNE  30-300MHz 64-51 dB(μV) CISPR 16-2-1

EMC Tests listed under IEC 61000-3-2

IEC 61000-3-2 is applied for all electrical products that has AC supply voltage and draws current below 16 Amps per phase. Harmonics emissions on AC power input port of EUT is measured via IEC 61000-4-7 compliant harmonic meter (or harmonic analyser). Each harmonic of fundamental power frequency (50Hz) is measured up to 40th harmonic. Measured harmonic emissions shall be under the limit defined in IEC 61000-3-2.

EMC Tests listed under IEC 61000-3-3

IEC 61000-3-3 is applied for all electrical products that has AC supply voltage and draws current below 16 Amps per phase. Flicker emissions and voltage fluctuations on AC power input port of EUT is measured via IEC 61000-4-15 compliant flickermeter (or flicker analyser) and power source. For full-compliance testing, power source is an additional requirement to fulfil the TDH requirement of IEC 61000-3-3. Measured flicker emissions shall be under the limit defined in IEC 61000-3-3. Some of the remarks related to the limits are given below:

Pst shall not be greater than 1,0;

Plt shall not be greater than 0,65;

d(t) during a voltage change shall not exceed 3,3 % for more than 500 ms;

the relative steady-state voltage change, dc, shall not exceed 3,3 %;
