About SIL (Safety Integrity Level) Certification

SIL certification covers assessment of industrial products which are intended to be used in any safety function with respect to the relevant parts and requirements of the relevant standard for a safety integrity level. This is generally achieved by an assessment of the product and the processes by a third party assessor.

What is Functional Safety?

It is the safety that control systems provide to an overall process or plant. It focuses on the functions of the system in terms of safety. Purpose of functional safety is to minimize daily life accidents and risks with high performance safety levels. Of course, this would require some tests and certification.

SIL Levels

SIL stands for Safety Integrity Level. A SIL is a measure of safety system performance in terms of proability of failure on demand. There are four discrete integrity levels: SIL 1, SIL 2, SIL3 and SIL 4. SIL 4 ensures the highest safety level.

Safety Integrity Level (SIL)

Risk Reduction Factor

Probability of Failure on Demand

SIL 4

100,000 to 10,000

10^-5 to 10^-4

SIL 3

10,000 to 1,000

10^-4 to 10^-3

SIL 2

1,000 to 100

10^-3 to 10^-2

SIL 1

100 to 10

10^-2 to 10^-1

How to get SIL Certificate?

We are following the below steps for SIL certicication of your products:

1. Determination about applicable standards and grade of safety

2. Consulting on applicable standards

A. Safety Analysis/FMEDA

B. If software is used, including validation of software (Static and Dynamic test)

C. Factory inspection

3. Prepare documents required by applicable standards

4. Submit documents to approval authority

5. After final approval, issue the certificate.

Notes

※ Depending on the degree of correction/complementation of the company for non-conformity, 3rd and/or 4th steps may be reapeated.

※ Test reports (EMC, environmental, functional, etc.) of the product are required to obtain the SIL certificate.

※ After issuing the SIL certificate, factory inspection is condected every year to maintain certificate.

Prepare for SIL Certication

1. Describe the function of the product (the function of the product alone and within the system)

2. Specify the level of product development stage:

– Development stage is going on
– Development is completed,

– Development is completed and commercialization is started

3. List the components of the product

A. Hardware

i. Whether to use PCB, MCU, etc.

ii. Redundancy status (power, logic, output, etc.)

B. Software

i. Whether software is included in the product.

4. Specify applicable industries

A. Functional safety is largely divided into general industries, automobiles, railroads, and robots.

B. The standards applied by the industry group are determination of the industry.

C. In the case of railway, whether GA or SA is available.

5. Submit evidence related to your product

A. For evaluation and certification, information related to product development (drawings, BOMs, etc.) should be provided later.

i. If the software is included, include the source.

ii. If you are not a company that developed the product, you need to check whether you can submit the evidence required for certification.

6. Specifiy the level of SIL (for instance SIL4)

A. Is your SIL level your customer’s requirement or your own target level?

A. The SIL level is determined through product analysis, and for products that do not reach the SIL4 level, various mechanisms can be applied to reach the target level.

B. Design changes may occur to reach the target level.

C. Depending on the company’s response to the application of mechanisms and design changes, the target level may not be reached.
