Radiated Emissions test is one of the EMC tests which is a common test performed for the various industries: consumer electronics, household appliances, radio devices and systems, IT equipments, machinery, medical, automotive, railway, defense and so on. The purpose is to measure unwanted RF signals emitting from the tested product or equipment under test (EUT). These signals shall be under the limits specified on the EMC standard applied. For instance, if the product is an multimedia or IT device conducted emissions testing of this product is mostly performed according to CISPR 32 or EN 55032 standard. Each product or industry is applying its own emissions test standards. In order to perform radiated emissions tests you shall have a test setup. The setup at least shall consist of three components: measuring receiver, antenna and an RF cable between the receiver and the antenna.
For full compliance radiated emissions testing, test setup requires CISPR 16-1-1 compliant EMI Receiver, CISPR 16 compliant antennas, RF or fiber cable to connect antenna and EMI Receiver, non-conductive test table (wooden or etc.), turntable (to turn the EUT), test site (OATS or anechoic chamber), pre-amplifier, pre-selector, test software. Large and medium sized manufacturers, test laboratories prefer full compliance radiated emissions test setup due to their internal quality policies or accreditation rules. If you want to apply all parameters of relevant EMC standar, you shall invest on a full-compliance test setup.
For pre-compliance testing you can choose any combination of above requirements and ignore some of them. For instance, you can use test cell instead of OATS or anechoic chamber. Pre-compliance radiated emissions tests would make your EUT’s ready for full compliance tests. Manufacturers, engineers and product developers prefer pre-compliance radiated emission test setups since it is more economic and simple. If you have already a full compliance test setup, you might invest on a pre-compliance test setup.
