Ingress Protection testing, or IP testing, determines a product’s susceptibility to solid particle (sand or dust) ingress as well as water ingress. It is one of the safety tests of the products.

I is for Ingress,

P is for Protection,

First Number is for Dust or Solids Protection Level

Second Number is for Moisture/Water Protection Level

IP levels show how well a device is protected from both solid objects and liquids. For example, a product with IP67 level is more protected when compared to a product with IP56.

For some products IP levels are defined by the manufacturer of the product. For some others, protection levels are defined in product testing standards.

You can see below IP rating chart. If your

First Number (Dust Protection Level)Second Number (Moisture Protection Level)
IP 0X – No Protection
IP 1X – Objects ≥ 50mm
IP 2X – Objects ≥ 12mm
IP 3X – Objects ≥ 2.5mm
IP 4X – Objects ≥ 1mm
IP 5X – Dust Protected
IP 6X – Dust Tight
IP X0 – No Protection
IP X1 – Vertically Dripping Water
IP X2 – 15 Degrees Tilt Dripping Water
IP X3 – Sprayed Water
IP X4 – Splashed Water
IP X5 – Water Jets
IP X6 – Powerful Water Jets
IP X7 – Effects of Immersion
IP X8 – Indefinite Immersion
IP X9 – High pressure, high temperature water jetting

Which standards are applied for IP testing?

For IP testing, in general, these standards are applied:

IEC 60529, EN 60529, NEMA 250 and UL 50E. IEC 60529 applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72,5 kV. According to IEC 60529, definitions for degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment as regards:
1) protection of persons against access to hazardous parts inside the enclosure;
2) protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects;
3) protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful effects due to the ingress of water.
