Radio Local Area Networks (RLANs, also known as Wi-Fi) are used at public places like airports, hotels, restaurants, cafes etc. These networks, also known as hotspots or Wireless LANs, allow users to connect their laptop to the internet and to make phone calls using VOIP (Voice Over IP). Day by day, RLANs are getting popular due to its advantages.

The frequency bands 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz are mainly used by Radio LANs and in many cases. As ETSI states, the continuously increasing demand for faster transmission rates make it necessary to identify higher frequency bands like 60 GHz.

In Europan market, ETSI technical committee is responsible for the Harmonised Standard covering Wideband transmission systems operating in the 2,4 GHz band, e.g. Radio LANs or Wireless LANs. For CE marking of RLANs, Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU is used. Required tests are performed according to ETSI standards.

One of the standards related to RLANs is ETSI EN 301 893. It is for 5GHz RLANs. Full title of this standard’s is

5 GHz RLAN;
Harmonised Standard covering the essential requirements of article 3.2 of Directive 2014/53/EU

In this standard, radio tests are performed according to given test items. Before starting testing, some information has to be provided by the manufacturer, designer or importer to test laboratory. Some of required information is shown below:

In accordance with ETSI EN 301 893, clause 5.4.1, the following information is provided by the manufacturer.

Nominal Channel Bandwidth 1: …… MHz
Nominal Channel Bandwidth 2: …… MHz
Nominal Channel Bandwidth 3: …… MHz
The associated centre frequencies:
